The Rosie Pope Rosetta Stone
I have received quite a few comments about the expressions that I use on Pregnant In Heels (not to mention my speech in general, but that’s a post for another time!). I must admit, a good deal of my favorite slang words are simply substitutes for clinical phrases/words I’m just too uncomfortable to state aloud- a standard Brit problem, no doubt. So, without further ado, here is a little primer for those of you following along at home:
- Queen Victoria: As you may know from the first episode, this refers to…well….the entirety of the female plumbing (even now I’m blushing imagining you all reading this). It strikes me as a decidedly lady-like way to refer to your lady-parts, like putting a little tiara on top.
- Prince Edward: As I am equally uncomfortable discussing boy parts on camera (and so the boys don’t feel left out of the “royal family” so to speak), I use this phrase in lieu of saying “penis.” Rest assured, however, that I am teaching my boys the proper terminology for all parts of their anatomy, regardless of how incredibly uncomfortable it may make me feel!
- Lady Town:See definition for “Queen Victoria”.
- God Save the Queen: Oh the uses for this lovely little phrase! They all boil down to the following: take care down there – and please, no camel toe on the mannequins!
- Jublies: A fun, playful word for breasts that is decidedly more polite than the horrific American frat boy phrase “fun bags.”
- Spotted Dick: Minds out of the gutter: this simply refers to a traditional English dessert often served at tea time.
- Fertile Myrtle: If you are one of those lucky ducks who can get pregnant by simply bumping into your hubby in the hallway (or by consuming one or two particularly strong dirty martinis at the right time of the month) then this refers to you.
- Holy Moly: As the parent of a toddler, this is my favorite non-swearword swearword. It’s essentially the G-rated version of “holy sh-t!” and is interchangeable with “wowza”.
- Crazy Town: This is my universal term for anything crazy – from something that’s just a touch off (like some of the conversations I’ve had with cab drivers over the past year) to full-blown mayhem (like when your toddler unexpectedly wakes up ready to party at 3 AM while you’re dealing with a hungry newborn who just soiled his entire diaper and nightgown, not to mention the t-shirt you have on). Can refer to a person, place, or thing – and for the foreseeable future, it’s the most appropriate way to describe my current state of affairs!
Did I miss anything? Which expression is your favorite?
I am familiar with the Fertile Myrtle, but I love the other ones as well!
You absolutely crack my husband and I up on your show! At first I was a little skeptical about it but your humor makes the whole thing worthwhile to watch, even my husband asks when it is on now and to have me record it! Your own lingo is so silly but so fun
LOL! My favorite is “God Save the Queen.” But I still crack up thinking about the dessert Spotted Dick, I’m sorry.
Rosie, I’ve enjoyed watching your show, but must comment on episode three that featured a fitness trainer working with your client. I’m an exercise physiologist who specializes in maternal fitness, and I was very concerned about the inappropriate exercises the trainer was asking your client (who was greatly overweight, had gestational diabetes, was deconditioned and nearly at her due date) to do. First and foremost, a pregnant women who is that many physical issues should never be encouraged to start out doing such intensive exercise. In addition, with your client being in her third trimester, laying flat on her back can cause the fetus to put pressure on her vena cava, causing decreased blood flow to her and her baby. There really wasn’t one thing the trainer did that was right, and she was not in the least bit sensitive to the needs of your client. Please, please use qualified fitness professionals when suggesting exercise to your pregnant clients!
I started watching your show today, I am actually watching it now and I love it! I think you are so sweet! I am 25 and have never had children but I plan on having kids in about a year and this show made me really excited to have a baby! About the exercise comment, I am not sure if it was appropriate or not because I am just a Psychologist and not an “Exercise Psychologist” but I don’t think she was trying either. Not one bit, so it didn’t even matter if the exercises were not good for her to do because it was clear that she was not going to try. At least you were trying to help her. I have to say, you handle stress very well! She seemed like a nightmare! Your little boy is adorable and I wish you luck on trying for another! Oh and I was cracking up over the expressions you used. Have to protect the Queen! Hahahaha
Love your show and LOVE those phrases. Just wanted to comment as well, though, about the workout done on the show with very overweight pregnant client who has stated that she hadn’t worked out for a year. That means she wasn’t working out even when she wasn’t pregnant. I was pretty nervous watching her struggle on your show – I’m not qualified to make a judgment but as compfc said, I don’t think that was appropriate for her at that point. I was pretty nervous watching that scene. Even if she wasn’t pregnant, she’ll need to start with walking or exercising in water! But her excuses on eating sweets really made me chuckle.
Rosie, I wanted to let you know I also had a heart shape uterus. I had 2 corrective surgeies to have it fixed. Between the surgeries I had a miscarriage, which was very hard to deal with at the time. Now I have a very beautiful 3 year old girl. Keep trying!!! Your son is beautiful. I wanted to let you know that there is others out there that understand your pain.
dear Rosie I am 26 and I never miss your show. My husband and I actually started watching your show together. We understand your struggle with having a baby we have had 5 miscarriages and we have been married for four years. your show is teaching me how to get in shape and the things I should and should not do as well as your are just the most inspiring person to me
Thanks for posting this! I was trying to remember “Queen Victoria” to tell my DH so funny! Thanks for sharing such intimate details of your ttc journey, I’m so relieved to read that you had a precious baby boy in February! I cannot wait to see his story unfold on your show I’m still ttc #1 and just at the beginning stages of IF treatment, thank you for making me feel like I have a girlfriend going through the same thing! I wish you all the BEST! I’m so impressed with how much you have accomplished before 30! You go girl!
I just wanted to say that i love your show and I love the way you talk! It is so cute! I think your show is amazing and I think sometimes the women you work with don’t realize how much you are truly helping them.
In response to Wanda…..If it bothers you that much don’t watch the show, and be nice or people will think you’re nothing but a …..”Queen Victoria”! Kat
I absolutely love open discussions, debate and am open to criticism of the brand, myself and Pregnant In Heels…but we also want this to be a safe place for our readers to share their thoughts and feelings openly without fear or harassment by others. When someone crosses that line we sadly have to remove them from this community to respect and protect the other users here. We hope you understand. We have removed several comments and banned a user from this comment thread that we feel were inappropriate and attacked other readers. Best, Rosie Pope
Queen Victoria for sure my favorite (in that I would even use it myself). But you’ve said MANY things that make me crack up. I’ve never heard anyone call em “fun bags” before…HA HA HA!
This was one of the best things I’ve ever seen.
