What’s Not to Love About the Jersey Shore?
It’s funny sitting down to write this blog. I have to admit I feel as though I have had bloggers block since the Pregnant in Heels season finale. There were so many ‘deep’ topics to explore during the show that all of a sudden when the show ended I sort of felt devoid of really serious stuff to tell you….or at least maybe I wanted to take a break from the heavy, if you know what I mean!
I’ve been wracking my brain trying to find something worthy to tell you while at the same time grappling with privacy issues. How much do I reveal about my sons, my husband, and my innermost thoughts? I can’t help but think that one day my boys will be sixteen and pretty mad at me if I start writing now about their naked escapades or potty training disasters. Or will they? It is just so hard to predict. I can almost hear you say how insane it is that I am having this internal debate considering I decided to put virtually my entire life on TV. But that is the thing; I chose to put my life on TV, but not necessarily my sons’ lives.
However, the fact that I have put my life on TV does necessarily mean that to some extent they too are in the public eye. I keep trying to make universal rules about photographs, about what I say, but let’s face it, I don’t think this is really going to be possible and my decision-making on privacy is going to have to be done on a case-by-case basis.
As my mind is wafting and wafting around the landscape of privacy in bloggerdom I find myself putting off the deep thoughts and focusing on the weekend….there will certainly not be any privacy issues there, as my family tends to escape to the Jersey shore, a magical place where I am far from interesting, and my hair is simply too flat for local tastes!
I know, I know I can already hear my Jersey friends protesting we are not all Snooki, but I couldn’t resist. But seriously my lovelies, I’m not going to lie, I absolutely love the Jersey Shore. My in-laws have a house down there and so many of our weekends are spent hob knobbing with Snooki and gallivanting around the boardwalk (funnel cake, anyone?).
I have to admit, I didn’t quite realize the full potential of the Jersey shore until I had children. Before I became a mother, I usually found myself at some completely insane (but awesome, in the true sense of the word) fist-pumping tiki bar, drinking something surprisingly sweet procured by my hubby (boyfriend at the time), not being understood by the locals (oh, those pesky bees on my tongue), but also delighted by the fact that these bars always seemed so conveniently located right next to a pizza parlor (amazing, considering that is exactly what one needs after a few hours of fist pumping and tropical delights).
However, since having children there is something I have discovered, something far more enchanting and fun: the boardwalk by day (not by night!). Agreeably, the Snooksters and the Situations of the world have given the Jersey shore a bit of a bad name (or amazing name, depending on your feelings towards tans and hair gel), and I can’t believe I am about to start defending the shore, but there is really nothing JR loves more than going to the rides on the boardwalk followed up by some “Delicious, oh my gosh” (as he puts it) ice-cream, and then a quick dip in the lagoon (I am a cannon ball pro)! I have this romantic notion that this is what Coney Island used to be like, plus the ridiculously long conservative swimming costumes complete with stripes and a beach tent. I have to admit, however, that I have yet to actually step foot on the Jersey beach per se — but then again, have you seen my skin tone?
I’ve resigned myself to the fact that I will never be the mocha lady sunning herself under a palm tree and will more likely be the one wearing fluorescent zinc stripes on my cheeks under the world’s largest pair of Ray-Ban Wayfarers and hat! Okay, so minus the zinc (I don’t want my kids to disown me). So, when you are hot and sweltering in a city somewhere, think about taking a trip this summer to a traditional shore, complete with rides, hot dogs, ice cream and your fair share of people watching….doesn’t get much better than that for a good old Saturday of fun with the kids this summer!
Hey Rosie, It was fun to hear that you and your family love the ‘real’ Jersey Shore! I loved your post and wanted to tell you about my business that I created to represent the beauty of the Jersey Shore. I designed a jewelry line called The Jersey Shore Bracelet Company, and we are based outo of Point Pleasant Beach. The two pieces I currently have are a sterling silver and 14k gold cuff styled bracelet and the JSB Starfish ring. They both have a cross hatching pattern that is a subtle representation of the pattern in the sand after a big storm. I love living at the Shore during the quiet winters and the excitement of the Shore when out of towners come for the summer! I love your style and would love to hear what you think! http://www.jerseyshorebracelet.com Thanks, Rosie!
