All About Barbie
I don’t know if I was a particularly girly girl on the outside. I didn’t spend time dressing as one princess or another, glued to every prince and princess tale, although I do remember secretly wanting to be all glitter and fairies and I have to admit now as I walk passed Tutus, Fairy Princess Stories and any other glitz that catches my eye I crack a smile thinking about whether my daughter will be into all of these things….because if she is mommy is ready to get out that bedazzler and glitter glue!
Don’t ask me why I didn’t go for it as a little girl, that would be far too complicated, a question to answer in one post! And let’s face it, girls can be complicated! However, I do remember having Barbie dolls and one amazing Barbie doll house equipped with an elevator (or at least I think it had one), a horse and of course Ken! I remember loving to play for hours on end creating complex inter-family dynamics between Ken, Barbie and this mystery doll called Cindy….and subjecting my Dad to also playing for hours and hours, what a good sport he was. I loved it, it was a complete escape.
Thinking back I am not sure what fantasies or realities I was playing out but think I might have actually found it therapeutic getting lost in Barbie’s world, or at least the world I gave her. Being pregnant with a girl it’s hard not to think about when I will buy her first Barbie, her first doll house, her first Ken doll and what my little girl will do with them. Will she love them for the fashion, will she use them as vehicles to play out family dynamics, and will she turn them into super action heroes and give them new names?!
Being in fashion, however, you can imagine my sheer joy when I stumbled upon designer collections for Barbie by Christian Dior and oh yes Christian Louboutin! I know I know I hear some of you shrieking with joy and others perhaps sighing wondering whether this is not sending the right message amongst young girls about the price of fashion. But that’s the thing with Barbie….she’s a fantasy, she allows us all, moms, dads sons and daughters to escape in a world that is whatever we want it to be. It doesn’t always have to be so serious all the time, or in fact at all realistic.
Princesses and fairies aren’t exactly a burst of reality either (I know that may come as a blow to some of you that are still hoping to marry Price Harry) but we don’t have such a problem with those. So I for one love that Barbie is celebrating some of the most luxurious and aspirational fashion brands of our day and I plan to celebrate her with my little girl. That is of course if her two older brothers don’t convince her that flying around like spider man and playing pirate ship isn’t a better idea! But something tells me we’ll still find time for Barbie and they may just agree, once or twice, to play too!
