Paging Mamatography: Original Holiday Photos Made Easy
‘Tis the season when parents everywhere scramble to find a picture featuring all their children (with or without their eyes open) to send out to our nearest and dearest in the form of a lovely 5 x 7 holiday picture card. Vicky Scesa, founder of Mamatography photo workshops, is back to help you capture the perfect shot without relying on old photo cliches.
This Holiday Season, go beyond the typical “white shirt & jeans on the beach” photo for your photo greeting cards. Whether you’re hiring a professional photographer or shooting pics your self, here’s some tips for SPICING things up!
First off, decide your location. If weather permits, go to the outdoors for your portrait session. Studio shoots still have their purpose but these days most Moms are choosing a more modern, natural light style. Say goodbye to the fireplace backdrop at the mall department store! If you want to get creative, pick up some holiday props that can double as decor for your home. It’s a good idea to have a theme or color scheme and avoid items that have graphics or writing. Try to get the little ones to interact with the props but position them in a way that their doll faces are still the center of attention!
As for what to wear…deck the kids in their holiday best! But again, when you dress the family, try to have a common color, seasonal solids are ideal. Think golds, reds, silver, grey, etc. Lime greens are popping up this season and photograph well. So have fun with fashion! |

Are you always the one stuck BEHIND the camera? Don’t miss the op to be in the shot with your family. Invest in a tripod for your camera. Preset the focus by having your family in position before you jump in. Once things look sharp in your viewfinder, set the timer and STRIKE A POSE! It might take a few snaps to get everyone in position, but this old fashion tactic works. For more on your camera settings, read Photo Basics & Beyond. |
Happy Holiday Snapping!
