Just Say No to Unnecessary 3D Ultrasounds
Unnecessary 3D Ultrasounds
News flash: Going through extra ultrasounds early in your pregnancy to get keepsake 3D ultrasound photos could potentially put your baby’s health at risk. In my pregnancy book, Mommy IQ: The Complete Guide to Pregnancy, I noted that not all doctors recommended these types of ultrasounds, and now the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists has advised against this kind of ultrasound during the first 10 weeks of pregnancy (unless of course recommended by your doctor for medical reasons!).
The specific risks to baby from these glamour-shot type 3D ultrasounds are unknown, but specialists say that your babe-to-be could suffer long-term effects from the procedure early in pregnancy. Yes, this is a precautionary measure, but as for most things in pregnancy, I think I’d always rather be safe than sorry when we simply don’t have enough information. Besides, ultrasounds take a long time, and laying there while all the imaging is done can be simply uncomfortable. I would always undergo any test that could ensure the health and safety of my children, but a test that I didn’t need? Personally, I’d rather spend that extra time (and money!) getting a prenatal massage!
What about you? Have you had 3D ultrasounds performed just for the fun of it? Would you get one done even with the potential risks? Let me know your thoughts in the comments.
